Ravenswood School for Girls will host An Evening with Professor Martin Seligman, featuring the founder of Positive Psychologyon 30 July from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
This event is open to the general public and is an opportunity to hear Professor Seligman’s latest insights on building wellbeing in young people and how we can flourish as individuals and communities.
Professor Seligman is one of the most cited psychologists in history and has authored or co-authored around 280 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and authored, co-authored or edited around 20 books. He is best known for the international best sellers The Optimistic Child, Authentic Happiness and Flourish. Authentic Happiness has been translated into more than 40 languages. Professor Seligman is also the recipient of a large number of awards, prizes, honorary degrees and fellowships and has served on the boards of numerous public and private institutions.
The study and practice of psychology worldwide, has been enormously influenced by Professor Seligman’s work. He has helped to transform workplaces, schools and the US Army. As a scientific pioneer in Learned Helplessness and Learned Optimism, he devised the PERMAH framework for wellbeing, which is the foundation of Positive Education, as it is practiced in schools across Australia and the world.
This is the second time that Professor Seligman has presented at Ravenswood School for Girls and tickets are expected to sell out quickly. His first Ravenswood appearance in August 2017, attracted a sell-out crowd of 1,000 people.
In a rare opportunity, Professor Seligman will also work directly with Ravenswood students from Kindergarten to Year 12 in July, as the School’s inaugural Eminent Psychologist in Residence. This will be one of very few times that Professor Seligman has provided his expertise to a school in such a deep and immersive way.
Ravenswood is the first school in NSW and one of only ten in Australia to be selected to implement a Visible Wellbeing approach to Positive Education, under the guidance of Professor Lea Waters, Professor and Founding Director of the Centre for Positive Psychology, University of Melbourne.
Earlier this month Ravenswood Principal Mrs Anne Johnstone, was the only woman in the world to be honoured by Eisenhower Fellowships, the University of Pennsylvania and Professor Martin Seligman, for ‘her pioneering work, her contribution and her internationally recognised leadership in the area of Positive Education.’
